The Origin of Your Favorite Treat

A cookie is most well-known as a thin, yet sweet, and somewhat small cake. But it's really anything that is hand-held and made with flour, and typically either crisp or soft. Every country has its own variation of them. A cookie in England is called a biscuit, amaretti and biscotti are well-known names in Italy, and in Spain they're called gallentas. The earliest known record of a cookie is from the 7^th Century in Persia, which is now known as Iran. This was one of the first countries to harvest sugar cane, one of the main ingredients in cookies.

Many of the first cookies in America were adapted from other countries. It wasn’t until the railroads were built that more people had access to ingredients, such as fruit and nuts. Once cornflakes were invented in the late 1800s, popular cereal boxes started sharing their own cookie recipes. This is still a common practice with cereal companies today, and the recipes are quite famous. In the 1930s, icebox cookies became popular with the invention of the electric refrigerator.

One of the most well-known cookies in the United States was actually invented by mistake. In a restaurant in Massachusetts, Ruth Graves Wakefield began making cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She decided to use a bar of semi-sweet chocolate and thought it would just melt into the dough. But to her surprise, little pieces of chocolate appeared in the baked cookies. She called these cookies, “The Toll House Crunch Cookies.” Ruth received recognition from famous baking brands, as the cookies were delicious. She then sold the rights to her recipe, and it was printed on the chocolate packaging. In 1997, the chocolate chip cookie became the official cookie of Massachusetts.
